CHURCH BAZAAR.
Tho St. Barnabas Church bazaar, held at Warrington on January 3, proved an unqualified success, and was largely attended during the afternoon and evening. The weather was fine and this made conditions generally more cheerful. The promoters of the function had in view the raising of funds necessary for effecting repairs to tho church schoolroom, and a sum of between £7O and £BO was realised as the result of their efforts. The Ven. Archdeacon Russell, of Oatnaru, who motored down specially for the occasion, in an entertaining • and humorous speech declared the bazaar open. Stallholders representing fancy goods, plain work, sweets, produce, ice cream, fruit salad and tea rooms were presided over by the ladies and good business was carried on throughout the proceedings. Games of various kinds under able and active supervision also helped to make the function more lively. Among the winners of prizes were Mr Sargusou (a handsome bedspread), two women (a doll each), two other women (a salad bowl and bed jacket. Tho men scored wins with a Christmas cake and a lamb, the latter being won in a guessing competition. Musical'items, etc., were contributed by Miss E. Cooper and a. visitor, and were much appreciated. At the close of the function a presentation was made to the Rev. Mr Williams of a travelling suitcase and money bonus in appreciation of his services to the church in the district included in his charge. Before dispersing three hearty cheers were given for the retiring vicar, Mr Williams, and also for the archdeacon, both of whom motored through to Oamaru the same night. Those chiefly connected with the organisation of the function were: Miss Gardner _ (president and treasurer of the Ladies’ Work Committee) Mrs MacAllum (secretary of the committee). Mesdames Jones, Wright, Maitland. Ingles, Padgett, Fraser, Lunam, Barclay, and Airs Foley. In addition Mrs Jones and Airs Kinross had charge of the Christmas tree. All men connected with the vestry and interested in the church’s activities also rendered assistance. A pleasing feature of the bazaar was that it received the hearty support of all denominations in Warrington, and was characterised throughout by the liberal patronage of all who attended.
