; SUICIDE PACT. MAN'S BODY RECOVERED. . 7 (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 6, The body of J. L. Davies, for whom a search had been made on the waterfront since last Wednesday, was recovered ineide the eastern tide deflector this after*’ noon. His hat and coat and a number of letters written by him and Mrs Julia Cubitt, in which they indicated their intention of committing suicide together, • were found on the water’s edge last week, and at the-same time Mrs Cubitt wa« discovered lying unconscious on the rocks. The body was seen floating by a passerby. who informed the police. It was at once identified as that of Davies. An inquest will be opened to-morrow, but it will probably .be adjourned sine die after formal, evidence-has been taken, as Mra Cubitt.. although. she has continued to show improvement each day, is not yet in a state to give 'evidence before' a jcoroner. So far ehe has not given any explanation of the affair to the police. A NARROW ESCAPE. i ' ’ CAR OVERTURNS,IN WATER.’ (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. January fl. Pinned in a motor car when it swerved from the road near Penrose on Saturday evening, and partly capsized in five' feet of water, Mr C. M. Cox. and his wife and son had q narrow escape from ■ being drowned. Mr Cox scrambled clear,* and dragged out his wife, who was semi-con-scious as a result of striking her head. Mrs Catherine Brightwell, of Taumarunui, who was injured in a motor accident __ on Turungakurui Hill'on December 25, V died in the Napier Hospital on Saturday. The body of Herbert Stanley Crockett, aged 24, who had been missing- since Christmas Eve, was found floating near the Miramar -‘wharf an Saturday evening’, DEATH FROM POISONING, (Specul to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 6. The inquest concerning the death of Richard Daniel Duder, an immigrant fronfcjj England, -who died in the Christchurch ) Hospital on November 29, 1929, was com/ eluded to-day before Mr E. C. Lewey, coroner. Duder was found in Riccartoa road suffering from the effects of arsenic poisoning. When the inquest was opened some time ago Felix J, T. Grigg, Government analyst, said/hat he had made an analysis of the organs and found a considerable quantity of poison. The poison found on Duder’s person and its manner of preparation indicated that he had a knowledge of chemistry. The medical evidence showed that death was due to ’ poisoning. It was stated that Duder ( had been dissatisfied with, the life in New Zealand. Evidence was given to-day that Duder called at a house in Riccarton road and said- hq felt queer and wanted to ring the ambulance. He was groaning with pain and vomiting, but did not want to say anything in response to questions. Robert E. Alexander, director of the Canterbury Agricultural College, said that on the day in question Duder left his room in the college grounds, shaved and dressed, and went in the direction of the city. A constable gave evidence that he had made investigations at Lincoln College, and there had found evidence that someone had been at work in the chemical laboratory after getting in through the window. It was quite possible to get in through the window. A test tube containing poison was found in deceased’s room and also signs of vomiting. Tlie coroner, giving bis verdict, said that Duder had died at Christchurch Hospital on November 29, the cause of death being poison self administered. COLLISION AT CROSSING. (Special to Daily Times.) INVERCARGILL, January 6. A collision, fortunatelynot attended bv \ loss of life, occurred at Wyndham at 5.30 j on Saturday evening. The rail car from 7 Edendaie was proceeding towards Wynd- \ ham when at the Ferry street crossing it was struck by a motor car driven by Mr Alex. F. Downie, of Tokanui. who was returning to Otara with passengers front the Mataura sports. The rail car was hit directly above the rear axle. The rear wheels were lifted clear of the track and the car ran over 20ft in the gravel and then completely overturned. Of the four passengers ip the rail car two ladies received cuts and bruises, while the porter, the driver, and the other two passengers escaped with a severe shaking. The car nas carrying a full load of passengers but no one was injured. The motor car, a tive-seater touring model, was badly damaged The body, steps, and luggage T earner of the rail car were extensively damaged. J LEG SEVERELY CUT. Robert H. Ellis, a single man aged 36 years, residing at Mosgiel, was admitted fh? Hospital at 2.30 p.m. yesterday suffering from severe lacerations of the left leg received through being caught in a horse-drawn mower which he was operating.
