ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
CITY OF NEW YORK SAILS. The Byrd Antarctic expedition ship City of New York, which left Dunedin on Sunday afternoon and berthed at Port Chalmers owing to the unfavourable weather, sailed at 8 a.m. yesterday for the Bay of Whales. The vessel left the harbour under her own auxiliary power.. The barque was taken clear of the port by Captain F. Duncan, senior pilot. The wind was fresh from the north-east, and the City of New York was soon under sail and made an auspicious start on her long voyage to the Bay of Whales. The New Zealanders who are included in the personnel of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition ship City of New York are Mr R. J. Orbell, wireless expert, of Auckland; Air Percy Wallace, Sawyers' Bay; Messrs A. B. Robinson, J. Robinson, Auckland; M. C. Woolhouse, H. L. Wilcox, S. V. Armstrong, H. R. Young, and P. Lockwood. These men hail from various parts of the dominion. Mr A. Brustad, who hails from Norway, and who until quite recently was the chief guide at the Hermitage, joined the ship as a. seaman, and an Australian—Mr W. Gribbin—joined the vessel as cook. With the exception of Messrs Orbell,, Wallace, and Lockwood, the New Zealanders mentioned joined as seamen.
