Bertha Cleavenger (43) won a judgment of £90,000, which is the largest ■ ever awarded in an American breach of promise action. In 1917 she arrived from the country and started a rooming house business. John Henry Castle, one of her boarders, worked in the Ford factory for £1 a day. When they became engaged, the girl loaned Castle £2OO to start him in a real estate business, his partner being Mr Henry Ford’s brother. They made a fortune of £1,000,000, and two years ago. Castle. notified her that he had married someone else. . The trial lasted six weeks.
