BASIC LIVING WAGE

NEW SOUTH WALES FIGURE,

COMMISSION’S PRONOUNCEMENT.

(United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) i SYDNEY, December 20. (Received Dec. 20, pt 11 p.m.)

The full bench of the Industrial Commission, sitting in Sydney to-day, declared the living wage of New ■ South Wales for a man and his wife and one child at £4 2s-6d a week, and for nn adult female employee at f2 4s 6d. 'Mr Justice Piddington, president of the commission, dissented, and in scathing remarks upon the conditions under which the commission was forced to act he likened the commission to a computing machine.

The old rate for anadult family, consisting of a man, his wife, and two children was £4 15s, so that the new basic wage represents a .rop of. 2s 6d, and covers a man, his wife, and only one child. The Government intends to revise the. child endowment plan, under which employees working under State awards shall pay 6d a week, towards the fund, to which the Government will, add a subsidy. When the Legislative Assembly met to-day Mr Lang, Leader .of the Opposition, demanded that the Government should suspend the basic wage declaration, but his motion for -suspension was defeated by 44 votes to 32. „
