SWIMMING.
PROGRAMME OF AUSTRALIANS. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 20. At the council meeting of the New South Wales Swimming Association, a letter was receive from the Manly Club protesting against the swimmer Ryan being matched against Bridson at Auck land the day after he left the boat, especially when he had been very sick. A motion that the Australian Swimming Union be censured for failing to prevent unfair treatment being meted out to Ryan and Griffiths in New Zealand was carried unanimously. UNFAIRNESS DENIED. STATEMENT OF DOMINION SECRETARY. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 20. With reference to the cable message from Sydney the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association denies that any unfairness has been shown to Ryan and Griffiths. The itinerary was arranged before the arrival of the swimmers in New Zealand, and was arranged on the assumption that they were fit. Griffiths proved to be so, but Ryan was off colour, a fact that could not be foreseen in New Zealand. The tour was starter! in Auckland, not because the New Zealand Association was anxious that Ryan should meet Bridson at the start of the tour, b,ut became climatic considerations made it essential that a start should be made In the warmer waters of the north. The Auckland centre arranged a quarter-mile race on the first night, and n furlong race on the second, but the furlong was changed to half a mile at Ryan’s own request.
