NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

DUNEDIN-PORTOBELLO ROAD. The unbroken weather experienced during the past week or two has interfered, to some extent, with the laying of the bitumen surface on ■ the lower road between Waverlcy and Macandrew Bay. The work has not been actually at a standstill .for any length of time, but the heavy, intermittent rain has prevented the desired headway being made. The new surface has, now been laid to a point past the Cove, the distance covered by the contractors being about one mile and ahalf. There is still a further stretch of about two miles and a-half to be covered before a junction is made with the 60 chains of bitumen laid last year. , There is little possibility of the junction being made until towards the end of January, at the earliest, as several days will be lost on account of the Christmas and New Year holidays. HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS.

Should the weather be favourable, largecrowds will no doubt visit Macandrew Bay during the Christmas holidays. The Association, anticipating a rush of visitors and temporary residents, has arranged for various attractions for the entertainment of all during the festive season. The principal of these will take the . form of music, dancing, and moving picture programmes. These attractions will be continued throughout the holiday period. The annual regatta, to be held on Boxing Day, will be an additional attraction, and on New Year’s Eye, a carnival on an extensive scale will be held in the Macandrew Bay Public Hall.

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENTS, j During the past week most of the business of Macandrew Bay have increased their stocks and made slight ivnproyements to their promises for the Christmas trade. A noticeable example is i l7 i ‘ Prookraan’s shop, where one of the latest electrically driven machines has been installed for dispensing ice cream and summer drinks, . The butcher, the baker, the grocer anticipate a busy time, and in order that the wants of all may be fully satisfied, every kind of foodstuff will be available. SCHOOL CONCERT.
