CITY POLICE COURT.
Friday, December 20. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRILL DEFAULTER. Archibald Easton, charged with failing to attend drill, was fined 40s and costs, ON LICENSED PREMISES. John Strachan Allen, who was charged with being found on the licensed premises of the Metropolitan Hotel after hours, was fined 20s and costs (10s). CHIMNEY FIRE. For allowing her chimney to take fire. Jean Frame was fined 5s and costs., CHARGE AGAINST ITALIAN. Pietro Dalliessi, who was represented by Mr W. Ruffell, was charged with selling liquor without a license.—The case had already been partly heard, and it had been stated that he had sold some wine which he had made himself.—A fine of 20s and costs (10s) was imposed. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. James Henry Woodward pleaded not guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly.—lt was stated in evidence that he had done no work for over six years and had “ sponged ”on his parents. He used violence and bad language in their home. The proceedings had been taken at the request of his parents.—The accused was remanded in custody until Monday, the magistrate stating that the probation officer would attempt to find work for him. If he was unsuccessful the accused would be imprisoned for three months. CHARGE OF TRESPASS.
On a charge of trespassing on his wife’s property during a separation order, Peter Smith was remanded in custody until Monday to allow the maintenance officer (Mr Holland) to make out an information against the defendant with refrence to the arrears of a maintenance order against the defendant in respect to his wife.
TRAFFIC BY-LAW CASES,
For riding a bicycle without brakes, George Brown was reprimanded and the case was dismissed.
On A charge of riding a bicycle in the Ocean \ Beach Domain Allen Jack M'Donald was convicted and discharged. For leaving his car parked at night without lights William Simpson Williams was fined 5a and costs.
Arising out of a collision in which the pillion rider on a motor cycle was killed William Tilbury, for whom Mr Hanlon appeared, was charged with cutting a corner, and Robert Charles King, who was represented by Mr F. M. Hanan, was charged with negligently driving a motor' cycle. Both defendants pleaded guilty.—The magistrate stated that he remembered the unfortunate occurrence. Tilbury had cut the corner slightly and he would be fined 20s and costs (10s). King had been travelling too fast, but he had already been severely punished. It was not a case in which a heavy penalty should be imposed. The defendant would be fined 30s and costs (£1 8s). ■ Cecil Cockburn and Arthur Lawrence, who were charged with driving without licenses, were each fined 10s and costs (10s).
Joyce Mary Townsend, who was represented by Mr B. S. Irwin, was charged i&ith passing a stationary tramcar and failing to report a motor accident, and failing to give her name.—Senior Sergeant Quartermaih said that the police had decided to accept a plea of guilty to the charge of passing a stationary tramcar and to withdraw the other charges. The motor car had passed over the foot of a woman who had alighted from the Opoho tram. When asked to, give her name the defendant refused, but as far as the reporting of the accident was concerned there seemed to have been a misapprehension.—Mr Irwin stated that the defendant was only a young girl and lived in the country. The car stopped in front of her, and she saw the conductor pull up the running board. Naturally she thought that the tram was coming back to town. She heard the conductor say that he would report the accident and thought that it was unnecessary for her to do so. She denied having been asked for her name, but there may have been a misunderstanding.—The defendant was fined 30s and costs (£2 9s). i
