AFFORESTATION WORK.
NEW ZEALAND’S EXAMPLE, (From Oca Own CoBBEepoNDEsr.) _ ■ LONDON, November 15. ■it if column article in the Glasgow Observer ’ describes the work oi anorestanon which ia eoing on in New Zealand, and maintains that Fast year the Dominion set an example to the world by planting 57,406 acres, far the largest extent undertaken in 12 months by any nation or _ colony. The article is a summary of the report °? Mr E- Phillips Turner, the Director of Forestry. ,lt is pointed out that deer, goats, and pig? are responsible for the destruction Of trees, and' that "10,000 deer were killed through the encouragement given by a bounty of 2s for every tail. For pigs Is was paid for each shout delivered, and the number was 13,441. For goats no allowance is made, hut most interesting is the effort instigated bv the service to find markets for the hides of these animals, and the State is taking some trouble to import them for gloves and 6ther purposes. It is believed that by finding a fair price for this raw material the people may be induced to hunt and kill them all. Native birds are protected, and State forest reserves automatically become sanctuaries, and no bird has been shot in any of them fbr quite a long time." The writer mentions that “ private companies have acquired over 200,000 acres, of which already over One-half has been planted with soft woods by money collected chiefly outside the Dominion. The Government does not support or grant a monopoly or concession to any private company, but departmental facilities and advice are extended to such enterprises if required.”
