Some time ago a prehistoric flint mine was discovered in the Wienerwald Hills, near the village of Manor, south-west of Vienna. Thu mine contains a, sort of hornstonc, and geologists say it is unique in Europe. Professor Bayer, the director of the Museum of Natural History, states that he has diseoveerd relics of a town connected with the mine, dating back to the Stone Age. The neolithic people who worked the mine had a highlydeveloped technical culture, making tools and many domestic articles out of flint. These people made excellent use of the mine, which was obviously worked by them for several centuries. A flourishing export trade was built up, and Mauer became a centre of a prehistoric culture. Professor Bayer declares that the skeletons found may be about 5000 years old. The Tibetan Government still bars the way to any new attempt to conquer Mount Everest. Permission was last refused on the ground that another expedition would again incur the anger ot the goddess guardian ot the summit of Mount Everest. The Tibetans believe that the goddess was responsible in the last expedition for the deaths of Mr Irvine and Mr Leigh-Mallory. The British Admiralty has prohibited the use of patent cigarette lighters in ships carrying aircraft. —London alone consumes something like 150 tons of nuts at Christmas time.
