OTAGO CENTRE MEETING. SUCCESSFUL AND EXCITING SPORTS. The season’s third, evening meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held at the Caledonian Ground last evening. A fairly large attendance witnessed the sports, which were of a satisfactory standard and marked by good entries and keen contests. The tracks : were wet, but the racing conditions otherwise were excellent. In the three-mile cycle event some breathless moments were occasioned by several riders being spilled at the stage when two laps remained to bo covered. The middle-markers had just passed the Stand, when, owing to the greasy track, half a dozen riders in close company— Mussen, Stokes, Parsons, Fletcher, Switali, and Templeton—came to grief, piling up in a fashion which looked very alarming. Fortunately, only minor injuries were suffered. None of those involved were incapacitated, and the damage to a machine or two was slight. Some of the best performances so far this season were provided by the fixture. The run of Or Thompson in winning the 440 yards was a good effort, and Dwight’s (Auckland) success in the. two-mile cycle lip race was distinctly worthy. The three-mile cycle event, although rather spoiled by . the spilling incident putting six- riders out of it, was - otherwise noteworthy by J. Fogarty’s good finish to "win. 1 Mr E. L. Macassey (president), H. T. Emmerson (sports secretary), and A. Burk (starter), assisted by other officials of the centre, efficiently controlled tho fixture, the events of which were all open.
