OPHIR NOTES.

(From Ocr Own Correspondent.) OPHIR, December 11, MANUHERIKIA BRASS BAND. The first annual meeting of the Manuherikia Brass Band was held in the board room of the Ophir Peace Hall on December 4. The vice-president, Mr H. E. Stevens, presided over a good attendance. The secretary-treasurer, Mr R, C. Graig, submitted'a satisfactory statement of finance, which was adopted. Mr G- C. Austing, who was present by invitation, gave an outline of the provisions of the Incorporated Societies Act, after which it. was unanimously agreed that the' band should become an incorporated society. The committee was elected as follows;—President, Mr C. L. Caldwell; vice-president, Mr H. E. Stevens; secretary-treasurer,' Mr R. C. Craigcommittee—Messrs C. Fraser (exofficio), A. Larsen, Ball, V. C. Richardson, How’John, J. E. Pitches and A. Gray; band officers—Conductor, C. Fraser; bandmaster, A. Larson; sergeant, V. C.'Rachardson corporal, Ball-lance-corporal, J. E. Pitches; drummajor, R. C. Craig. Aj sub-committeo, consisting of the president, secretary, , conductor, bandmaster and Mr Austing, was appointed to draw up a set of rules to be submitted to a future meeting. A suggestion by the secretary that the committee consider £he provision of a car for the use of the conductor in attending practices, was favourablv received, and it was resolved to leave the matter to the committee. LAWN TENNIS. • found of inter-Club matches in this district having been completed, the Ophir Lawn Tennis Club last Saturday played home match—Married v. A liberal handicap was imposed in favour of the married plavere, who won a majority of -the games, though the sets were equal. Spottis Creek is now leading with 32 points (six wins), Matakanui and Ophir following, with S points and 4 points respectively. CRICKET. The Naseby Cricket Club came to Omakau ground on Saturday, when, as had been anticipated, a close match was played, the visitors winning by 92 runs to 84. Naseby‘passed Omakau’s score with seven wickets down, but the last three players added ojily seven to the score. It was the howlers’ day, with a

fast pitch, and the outfield slow owiae to the growth of grass. C.-Austing, who has been headmaster of Blacks School for over six years, has resigned as from the end of the year, and expects to leave Ophir next month. Tlie departure of Mr. Sirs and Miss Ansting will cause some IS or 14 vacancies in local organisations. Mr Mark J. Hargrave, who has been proprietor of the Shamrock Hotel, Ophir for the last three and a-half years, ha* sold out to a Dunedin firm at a satisfactory figure, and Mr J. A. Taylor, from Christchurch, has taken charge ; of the business. THE WEATHER. | The weather since the first of the month has been changeable, but on the j whole fine, and local sheep-shearing has 1 had a clear run of eight days. Two j points of rain fell on December 6, and I another two points yesterday; The dsvs have been moderately warm, and the j nights mild, except for a sudden drop in .the temperature early yesterday morning, when the grass thermometer showed a minimum of 23.7deg—8.3dcg below freezing. This morning is rather close. Jbs barometer has been stationery at -9.82 in for 24 hours and thunderclouds are on the horizon.
