WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
DUNEDIN CENTRAL BRANCH, _ Tho annual meeting of the Dunedin Central Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday. There was a good attendance of members. Mrs Hiett (president) occupied the chair. Mrs Hiett read tho annual report and moved'its adoption. Miss Powell seconded the motion, -and proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Hiett for preparing it. The parliamentary report waa read by Mrs Downing, who moved its adoption. Mrs Don .seconded this. Mrs Garden made ‘a rough statement concerning funds, as the financial rear did hot end .till December 31.—Received. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr and Mrs Polsen sympathising with them on the death of their nephew. Mrs Alexander sent in her resignation as" corresponding secretary, on account of ill-health, .It was received with) regret; Several members spoke- on the good work done by Mrs Alexander. A very enjoyable solo was sung by Mrs Betting. ■ On behalf of the ladies of tho union, Mrs Don presented Mrs Hiett with - a bonquet of flowers, and referred .to the very fine work done by .her. A bonquet .waa also- sent to Mrs Alexander in token of tho work done by her. The following officers were elected:— President, Mrs Hiett (re-elected); vicepresidents, Mrs Dick and Sirs Don (reelected); recording secretary. Miss Arisen; corresponding secretary. Miss Macandrew; treasurer, Mrs Garden (reelected). It was decided that the superintendents of departments be re-elected ' The annual report stated that the roll , joined this year. Several members were bereaved during the year, and two had died —Miss Reid, a constant attender at the meetings, and Miss Fulton, a daughter of the first Dunedin president. Letters of sympathy were sent to all bereaved members. i The following subjects had been dealt ! with:—“Headquarters,” “The Child—its I right to bo well born, and the effect of j alcohol on the unborn child,” “ The dc- : cline in the use of alcohol as a medicine,” “The White Ribbon,” “The League of Nations,” by Mrs Leech, and “Soma Aspects of Social Work,” given at the I Conference by Dr" Scideberg MTunnon. Thanks were duo to Mrs Leech and Dr S. M'Klnnon for their valuable assistance. Addresses had also been given to other organisations of women by members of the union, the topic being “ AlcoJjol, and its effect on women and chilaren. Ten scientific temperance charts I bad been given by the union - to schools in town and country. Parcels of reading matter hart been set to thv- backblooks. League of Nations literature had been distributed amongst the members at mothers’ meetings. Thero were 100 Subscribers to the White Ribbon.” and the union paid lor the paper to be sent to eight institutions. There were 246 babies on the cradle roll. Twenty-five name* had been sent on for transfer to bands of hope. The following resolutions were passed and sent to various Minister* and the Prime Minister;—ln regard to objectionable hoardings; against the increase in racing permits and the.publicntion of dividends; in favour of raising the age of marriage for minors; increasing family allowances, invalid pensions; women police; protest against thf establishment of the brewery at Otahubu; that a woman legally separated from her husband be allowed to receive the family allowance; and that picture poster* be censored.
