OWAKA SHOW.

TWENTY-SECOND ANNUAL FIXTURE. HIGH STANDARD Of EXHIBITS. The annual show of the Owaka A. and P. Association was held yesterday, and although, a heavy shower of rain fell in , the morning, the weather cleared after ■ midday, with the result‘that the attend- ■ ■ ance was almost-on a par''with that of last'year, the gate, takings;being £63 14a 6d, compared with £64 7a ,3d for the 1928 show. Entries in , some of . the sections - were small, but in every case, the quality of the exhibits was of a high-standard, and competition was keen. HOME INDUSTRIES. , The home industries section, was a par- , ticularly good pne, fruit cake, perhaps, being, the outstanding feature. Competition in scones was. poor, ■ but the. quiyity was good, and in the homemade bread and cakes, although entries were small, the judge had diffifficulty in , separating the placed competitors. Unfortunately entries were small in the butter section, but the quality all round was good, only one indifferent sample being shown. SHEEP. Although there was no competition in the crossbred section, the animals entered were well brought out, well grown, and well woolled. The.pair of ewe hoggets, strong woolled, were outstanding, and the heavy wethers were also good sheep. The , freezing lambs were good for their purpose, and of good weight and quality. In the Border Leicester and Romney Classes, the judge said that it was a pity that there were not more of such useful •breeds shown. The entries were somewhat weatherbeaten, but this was only to be expected at this time of the year. The Romneys were a particularly good lot and very true to type. The winning ram was a fine beast, and the ewe hoggets were •Iso very good, but they were not brought ; out to the extent that they might have been. The champion ewe was an outi standing sheep. HORSES. * The draught horses were a good section, but the entries were disappointing Mr Webster’s champion entire was a fine type of'horse, and the winning spring dray horse was a fine set-up animal of good stamp. Some very fine light horses were shown, and in the majority of the sections a Very narrow margin of points separated the placed entries. CATTLE. The Jerseys were a pood section throughout and Mr Arams's aged bull was ail outstanding beast, which was fit for any show ring in the Dominion. Mr Burgess's aged cow, not unknown in local show rings, was easily the best dairy cow on the ground. Mr H. C. Anderson showed some very fine Jersey cross cattle, and ■Mr Anderson’s purebred yearling was a very fine beast. The Shorthorns were not numerous, but some very fine beasts were shown. The winning bull, although only a yearling, was a fine beast with plenty of substance, and would hold ’his own in any show ring. The winning heifer was a nice beast. She had a beautiful top line, was nicelv handler, and ran the winning cow very close for the championship. The Red pqU» were of fair substance and line, hui were lacking in colour. Entries in the Friesian section were poor. The prize-winning yearling bull was_ an outtanding beast, aqd had the makings of a champion. The following are the results:— CATTLE. MILKING SHORTHORN.
