CHILD MARRIAGE BILL
MOHAMMEDAN PROTEST,
A DAY OF MOURNING
(United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)
DELHI, November 29,
Thousands of Mohammedans in India to-day observed a Hartal (Day of Mourning) as a protest against the passing of the Child Marriage Bill, which prohibits marriages of Indian girls under 14. Previously there was no limit, and it was quite common to see marriages of girls of ten years of age. Appeals to the Viceroy to prevent the Bill becoming law in April next, on the ground that the measure would interfere with the rights qf Moslems, and the basis of the Islamic law, proved fruitless.
Mohammedan shops closed in the chief Indian cities, and in Calcutta Europeans have difficulty in securing food supplies.
