THE FORCE OF EXAMPLE.

TO THE EUITOB. Sib, —One reading the reason given by Commissioner F. W, Sandford why the Boy Scouts’ movement has not made more headway in New Zealand—namely, that many scoutmasters do not carry out the spirit of scouting—cannot but fed grieved that such is the case, but many will agree that the commissioner’s remarks are all too true. The same remarks apply also to persons connected with many other movements. Is it any wonder that the younger generations have no moral ideals set before them, when they hear of their elders —and parents in many cases—joining lodges, scout movements, etc., taking vows and oaths, and signing rules, when those of their own household know that they are living a and Hyde existence? One of the writer’s acquaintance' lately remarked: '■ I have ■ wriggled myself into the Masons’ lodge, and can now do as I like," the like being to neglect his own home, lead a double life, and degrade the very real spirit of the Masons’ order, of which my father was a very honoured master. I think that the time has come when more strigent inquiries should be made regarding the moral life of all those who would flaunt themselves before the public, and that this should be done if only tor the sake of the rising generations, which are not slow to see through the camouflage and veneer of some of their elders, making it impossible for them to honour them.—l am.
