Allen George Wnttnin, n storeman in tbe employ of the Auckland Harbour Board, was convicted on charges of stealing goods, including silk and whisky. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) deferred sentence, but refused bail, saying that the prisoner was a trusted employee, and had even been sworn in as a special constable. HAMILTON, November 14. The Waikato Hospital Board to-day let a contract for the erection of a maternity ward at a cost of £12,440. The British Medical Association has been successful in its oppos : tion to tbe scheme for co-opcration between the Waikato Hospital Board and the Huntly Medical Club. The association objected to the board appointing a doctor to attend club members in their homes as well as in hospital, contending that this wag unfair interference with private practice. A private conference was held by the board recently with Dr Elliott, president of the British Medical Association, and the Huntly representatives. A report was drawji up asking the Huntly people to revise the scheme to meet the wishes of the association. Mr Smith, the Huntly representative, stated at to-day’s meeting of the boai;d that the people realised it was impossible to get a suitable doctor against the association’s opposition. The chairman. Mr Campbell Johnstone, said he hoped that Huntly would make an arrangement similar to that at Te Kuiti, the board subsidising a local doctor for hospital work The much discussed difficulty of obtaining payment of hospital fees from Maori patients was again before the Waikato Hospital Board to-day. It was resolved to write to the Native Affairs Department, with a view to having part of the payments made in compensation for the confiscation: of Maori lands earmarked for payment for medical services to indigent Native*.
