BRITISH MIGRANTS

CANADA’S LOST OPPORTUNITY. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) VANCOUVER, November 13. (Received Nov. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) "Spoon-fed immigration from Britain to Canada is spoiling the settlers and ruining Canada’s opportunity of attracting independent men who may come at their own expense,” declared Colonel Malcolm Kincaid Smith, a former member of the British Parliament. During the past 10 years, he said, a stream of immigrants, the finest material in the world, had been flowing from Britain to the United States, and Canada made no effort to attract them. Spoon-fed immigration was hurting the prestige of the dominions in Britain. He urged greater publicity of Empire opportunities in Britain. ACTION BY AUSTRALIA. SUSPENSION OF ASSISTANCE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 13. (Received Nov. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Arthur Ponsonhy (Under-secretary for the Dominions) stated that a telegram had been received from the Prince Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia stating that it had been decided to suspend for the present the granting of assisted passages to Australia: Ho had received no communication on tha subject from any of the State Governments, but he would point out that under the arrangements in force the granting of assisted passages was a matter for the Commonwealth and not for the State Governments. Mr Ponsonhy added: "I am satisfied that all parts of the British Empire oversea are sympathetic to migration from this country, but the respective Governments must necessarily reserve the right to control the movements of assisted migrants in accordance with local economic conditions. The question of the suitability, of various parts of the Empire for migration from hhis country depends on many factors'-which cannot he discussed within the limits of answering a parliamentary question.”
