LORD STONEHAVEN
QUESTION OF SUCCESSOR. OFFICIAL BRITISH COMMENT, (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, November 13. " Wait and see,” is the official attitude towards the report from Australia that the Labour Party was adopting a motion in favour of the appointment of a local Governor-General. It is recalled that a similar discussion took place over State Governors for Canada in recent years when it was laid down that there was nothing to prevent the Dominion having local nominees, but it was pointed out that it was a different matter with a Governor-General in the light of the 1920 Imperial Conference, which designated him as the personal representative of his Majesty, who would he guided by his Australian - Minister. Unofficial comment is that one of the difficulties will be to get someone entirely detached from local politics. A PROBABLE APPOINTMENT. SIR WILLIAM BIRDWOOD. LONDON, November 13. It is reported in well-informed Indian circles in London that Field-marshal Sir William Birdwood will be the next Governor-General of Australia. It is understood that Sir William Birdwood has been twice previously approached, but refused on the grounds of the expense. Ho has now decided to accept the post.
