During the dredging boom in 1901 the Hartley and Reilly and Lady Ranfurly dredges obtained pheno--run » returns on either side of this bend. The old miners have always expressed the opinion that these returns were from a rich lead whjch runs through Cornish Point. The difficulty of coping with the water before the days of electric pumps prevented the ground be’Ug worked to any depth. With the advent of power Pumps a syndicate put down a shaft for the purpose of prospecting this area, but being hampered by want of capital, sold to the present company, just after reaching bottom, when a good sample' of gold was obtained. On starting operations the company found it necessary to put in a new shaft as floods had caused considerable damage to the old one. This shaft is now within a few feet of the rock bottom and the water is being successfully held Arrangements are being made.for the installation of a standby pump.
