RANFURLY NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) RANFURLY, November 14. VALEDICTORY. ■ A very popular couple, Mr and Mrs James Crutchley. have removed from Ranfurly to Balclutha, where Mr Crutchley has received an appointment. A social evening was held iu their honour in the Presbyterian manse recently, when an interesting programme was carried through. The Rev. J. S. Young, on behalf ot the choir, presented Mrs Crutchley with an antique bronze .fireside set,-and spoke in -appreciation of the valuable services both the <guests bad rendered as members, and of the keen interest they had taken in its welfare and progress. Mr and Mrs Crutchley have endeared 'themselves to a large circle throughout the plains by their warm spirit of friendship, and their departure. is much regretted. WAIPIATA-PATEAROA PARISH. An event long looked forward to took place on Tuesday in the Waipiata Presbyterian Church in the ordination and induction of the Rev. S. D. Baird to the pastoral charge of the Waipiata-Pateavoa parish. The Rev. J. S. Young, interim moderator, presided. The Rev. H. Graham, of.Roxburgh, a sermon on 1 Lor. lii. The Rev. J, Collie, of Queenstown, addressed the minister, and the Rev. J. Robertson, of Alexandra, addressed the .congregation on the mauv ways m which the members could help to make the pastor’s work successful and fruitful. After the authorised questions had been satisfactorily answered the solemn act of ordination took place bv the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. The church was crowded to tlie door. In the evening a welcome social was held m the Public Hall at Patearoa, which was also filled to the door. The Rev. J. S. Young presided. The Bov. C. Sullivan, of Pembroke, moderator of the presbytery, expressed the welcome of the presbytery to Mr Baird. The Rev. .7. Robertson, of Alexandra, presbytery clerk, spoke words of welcome, and finished with a humorous Scottish readmg. The Ke%v J. Collie, of Queenstown, spoke of his long knowledge and interest m Central Otago and of his intimate friendship with the late Rev, J. M'Cosh hrnith. a pioneer minister of the plains, and of his own connection with Naseby, where his father had been a miner in days now long past. For the parish, Mr
E. J. Gibson. Mr W; H. Treaonning, an old pioneer, Mr Hastie, of Kokonga, and Miss ,Tregonning extended a warm welcome. The chair was then taken .by the Kev. S. A. Baird, who was warmly ap. plauded. He expressed his thanks for the many kind words and the evident goodwill which greeted him on every hand. Miss Shannon, travelling-secretary for the toting Women’s Bible Classes, also spoke briefly. The choir sang two anthems, a of Patearoa School boys in characteristic . dress gave “ Ten' Little . Nigger Boys ; Miss Tregonning, Miss Page, Mr .Roberts, solos; and Mrs Matthias and Miss Tregonning a duct. The Rev. Hugh Qraham. of Roxburgh, arid the Rev. A. H. Vv heel don also took part. • ili.'s Shannon addressed a young people s gathering at Patearoa last evening. when there was a very .good attendaiire. This_meeting closed Miss Shannon’s visit to the congregations of Central Otago. In every place she had, been the means of arousing fresh enthusiasm, and by her clear, lucid messages has given light and leading to the young minds in every parish. .
