NORTH-EAST HARBOUR CLUB. , A very , interesting race eventuated-be-tween the Takapuna class boats at Macy Saturday , afternoon. Itie. following boats started:—The Puthe Tu 0ll » n - f , he Suzette, and the Signax. The Pupuke was the first to cross the. h Tie, her spinnaker bfeinjr set smartly. The other .boats followed closely Rav th j. off CompTbys Bay the Pup.uke was well , ahead? and rounded Imm JOsec in the lead of the other boats, which were only a few seconds apart. In the beat back to the starting line dhe Pupukc still held her ead. The Pupuke’s skipper (S. Be" ley) showed good judgment in standing dose inshore off the clubhouse, which course of .action enabled him to make one long board to the buoy off Mitchell’s. All the other boats made short tacks This was to their disadvantage. The Pupuke '" c 7 r ' od , bar lead,-and rounded the bnov off Mitchells, six minutes ahead of the second boat; In the run to the finishing me the Pupuke further increased her lead, and crossed the line seven minutes aheau- of-Signax, the second boat. The following are the sailing times;—Punuke rn’lWn 52 O Si ? lhr o lmin 55e^ Lolleen,-. lhr. 2mm 42sec; Susette, Thr’ 3mm 6see.‘ : • .At-
The following-boats started in’the 20ft and under cace:—Squib. Heather, Mavis. Agnes, and Felix. The Agnes ■ was first across the line, and was followed by the other boats. Spinnakers were smartly set, and on the run to the buoy off Company s Bay all the boats were sailing in close company. On the beat back to the starting line the Heather held leading position, and crossed the line about 2rain ahead of the other boats. Heather retired from the race, leaving the local boats to compete for first place.- The Squib was sailed very well, but on the run to the finishing line the spinnaker boom broke,, and the boat was handicapped’ in consequence.' The Agncjr the next boat, then went into the lead” and crossed the, line first, and won on her. handicap. The following are the sailing times:—Agnes, 59min 40sec; Felix, Ihr 2nun 55sec; Squib. Ihr 3min 9sec. The outboard motor boat race created considerable interest. Several new boats faced the starter for the. first time. The Static showed remarkable speed and was the only boat to complete . the course. All the other boats were either disqualified or developed engine trouble The crews .of the Takapuna boats Pupuke and Colleen were out during last week-end practising for the forthcoming trials. Spinnaker practice was the order of the day, and it was a treat to see these two boats under full sail. Macandrcw- Bay presented an animated appearance last Sunday, when 12 yachts and a number of motor boats were seen cruisifig on the eastern side-of the harbour. i •
