INVERCARGILL, November 7. The death at Riverton of Mr John Petchell at the age of 86 years removes an old and respected resident of that district. Born at Brookhouse, Yorkshire, the deceased came to the Dominion with his parents, arriving by the ship Stately Jn 1854, and was among the first of th; early settlers in Otago to take up land at Inch Clutha. When the Tuapeka rush broke out in 1862 Mr Petchell went there on trading ventures. In 1869 he decided to come to Riverton, and purchased land at the Pournkino, where he started saw-milling in partnership with his father and brothers. On relinquishing this enterprise, he took over a grocery business which was being conducted under the style of Messrs Petchell and Bell. During his long residence iu Riverton the deceased, although of a somewhat retiring disposition, took an active interest in the welfare of tho town. He occupied the position of mayor, and was a member of the Borough Council for many years. He was also conncctel with the Athenaeum and the Bowling Club, being one of the founders of the latter club. Ho was also the oldest living member of the Aparima Masonic Lodge, and occupied tho position of W.M for many years. He leaves a family of three daughters and one son.
