(Received Nov

A Jekyll and Hyde story was revealed at this week’s trial of M. Dumas, exMayor of Bailleul, who, in the daytime, was a sober, honest bourgeois, pursuing a manufacturer’s business and devoting himself to his mayoral duties. In the course of eight years he made war-devas-tated Bailleul one of the most charming cities in Northern France. At night time, however, Dumas became a different man. Elegantly dressed, he motored to Paris in winter and to Le Tourqnet in summer and he patronised night clubs and expensive restaurant's. He raisappro--priated £24,000 sterling' in three years, and, failing to recoup his losses at gam bling, he confessed everything. He was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
