THE RAINFALL,

A further 36 points of rain were registered by Mr W. Forrester for the 24 hours ended _ 9 a.m. yesterday, bringing the total rainfall for the week to one inch. OAMARU MUNICIPAL ABATTOIRS

The manager of the Oamaru Municipal Abattoirs reported to tbe Oamaru Borough Council last evening that there were slaughtered during the month 173 head of large cattle, 872 sheep, 37 lambs, and 7 pigs, .of which one sheep was found unfit for human consumption and passed on to the digester.

JUSTICES OF ’.IE PEACE,

In reply to. representations of the need for the appointment of an additional justice of the peace at Kurow, the Minister of Justice (Mr T. M. Wilford) has advised the North Otago ' Justices ,of the Peace Association that he will make such an appointment shortly after the close of the session.

OLD MAN’S SUDDEN DEATH.

John IWatson. aged 75. years, a labourer, of Herbert, dropped dead at tie home at 4 o’clock'yesterday afternoon. Dr Trotter, of Herbert, had been. attending the deceased, who was a married man, for the last two years, and last saw him bis weeks ago. It is understood that an inquest will not be necessary.

TOKARAHI BAZAAR,

The bazaar held in the Tokarahi Hall proved very successful, the gross takings amounting to nearly £l4O. Mr Hore (chairman of. the Hall Trust) ofliciaJly opened . the bazaar, and paid a tribute to the ladies, and especially Mrs G. Grant, for their excellent work in organising the bazaar. Considerable interest waa_ taken in the baking competition, the judges, Mesdames Yardley and Taylor, of Duntroou, awarding the following nrizes:—Plain scones. Mrs Hutchison; girdle scones, Mrs :Blair; pikelets, Mrs Hughes; sponge sandwich, Mrs Hughes; Mies.C, Simpson; seed cake, Mrs . Wilson; shortbread, Mrs Wilson; chocolate coke, Mrs Hughes; gingerbread. Miss C. Simpson; pastry, Mrs Stephenson; sponge roll. Miss Porter. Mrs A. Paterson won the sheepguessing competition, with the correct weight. 110!b, and Mrs Budge won the case'of petrol'allotted o the gross receipts competition.

AUDIT. DEPARTMENT AND

CR FOX,

'When the minutes of the previous meeting had been read at the Oamaru Borough Council last evening, Cr E. A. Fox. who had taken his seat at the council table, made the following statement:—“ 1 move the adoption of the minutes. In doing so, I wish to state that I.received a letter fro® . the Audit _ Department intimating that in • the_ opinion of the department I was disqualified from taking part in conncil matters., I may-say that in my own opinion I have done nothing,to disqualify myself, and I have no intention ■ of resigning my seat. I move the adoption pf the minutes merely for the purpose of intimating the stand I intend to take, and for the purpose of giving the Audit Department an opportunity of taking such action against me as it may think

The Mayor seconded the motion, which was carried,. and Cr Fox, receiving permission to-retire, left the Council Chamber. - • .

RELIEF WORKS COMPLETED,

The engineer reported to the Oamaru Borough Council last evening that the following relief works had been com pleted:—Oamaru Creek improvement £233 lls 3d estimated expenditure £300) ; North Oamaru outfall drain £340 Os 2d (estimated expenditure £350 ). The uncompleted relief; work on the Severn street bank improvement would be completed this- month. The expenditure to Novem-'' ber. 2 was as follows:—Labour, £628 7s 3d; . material, £903 3s 3d; —total. £1531 10s 6d,

Cr Calder urged that nowithe work was finished at the Oamaru Greek, steps’ should be taken to keep it in its present good condition. Cr Wright-stated that £2OO was spent on labour on the Severn street bank last year, which brought the total expenditure to about £1750. The Mayor reported that while the estimated amount of stone required. was 12,000 cubic feet, the actual amount required was. 14,000 cubic feet. He promised m full statement on the subject at the ■ next council ’ meeting.

CORPORATION GAS DEPARTMENT

The manager of the Corporation Gas Department recommended ,to the OaiMIU Borough Council last evening, as suggested by the audit inspector, that the list value of plant be written up by £6OO, and reticulation by £545, a total q£ £1145, making the value of plant and reticulation £30,045, and also that the first year’s interest and preliminary expenses be written off at 5 per cent, per annum. The recommendation was approved. ’ i Cr Cooney reported that the profit on the department for the year ended March 31, 1929, was £1782, compared with a net profit of £699 the previous year. The sales of gas realised £10,647, or £1273 os 4d greater than in the previous vear, and Sales of residuals £3544, or £298 18s 7d less than the previous year, but as there was £3OO more stock at the beginning of the year the result was about the same. The coal carbonised cost £l6O 19s Id more than in the previous year, but the greater amount of gas sold showed that they were getting better results from the coal than previously. He thought the undertaking was showing a very fine return, and suggested that if possible some concession would soon be made to large users of gas On behalf of the manager and himself, he expressed gratitude to the auditor, who had made many suggestions for the benefit of the department, and now the department was being run on up-to-date lines. The Mayor stated that the report was very satisfactory indeed.

Cr Cooney added that additions to plant and reticulation would not be so heavy as in past years, so that much of the expenditure would be non-recurring, and they should'stimulate the greater use" of gas bv consumers.

With a view to overcoming Mrs Familton s complaint it was decided to construct a sump in Ain street at a cost not to exceed £lO, and that residents in Upper ‘Ain street be requested to connect with tne sewer.

On the recommendation of the drainage engineer, permission to have drains m conmoii' was granted to Messrs MQuade and Campbell, qnd to Mr R. 3. Wilson and Miss Wansborough. The Tender, of Mr G. T. WAITAKI ACCLIMATISATION

SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Waitaki Acclimatisation Society wa s held last evening, Mr H. Kean presiding over an attendance oi seven members. Dr R. D. Milligan wrote for information in respect to a black swelling disease among trout.—Referred to Mr J, MThaii ot -tlaKataramea.

The Isew Zealand Acclimatisation Societies Association forwarded a cony of recommendations passed at the annua] conference.

Mr Bitehener wrote stating that a resolution had been brought forward in the House by the Public Works Department

to obtain control of the Arapuni dam, on the _ Waikato River, and stated that a similar proposal would be made in regard to the Waitaki dam, and asked for the society’s opinion on the matter. The secretary was instructed to write stating that the question would be dealt with at a fuller meeting of the society. , Mr J. A. Amies was granted permission to cull deer on the Birchwood Estate to the Canyon mouth, and. on both sides of the Ahuriri River, provided that the blocks were not required for licenses. Mr Martin reported that 20,000 rainbow fry had been liberated in the, Oamaru Greek; 22,000 brown fry in the Kakanui River, and 60,000 rainbow 'fry in Lake Ohau.

It was decided to procure a number of fishing regulations for issue to' license holders.

The lodge meeting last evening was presided over by P.A. Bro. Waring. Sick pay amounting to £ll Gs 'Sd was passed for payment, and the yearly Christmas tree was arranged for.
