MR OSCAR SLATER
AN ALLEGED DEBT. CLAIM BY CONAN DOYLE. LONDON, September 17. Mr Oscar Slater—from whom Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is endeavouring to recover £250 allegedly advanced toward the expenses of the appeal which resulted in the quashing of the conviction against Sinter for the murder of a woman in Glasgow in 1008, Slater obtaining £OOOO compensation—is residing at a good hotel. Slater offered an interviewer a cigar from an expensive -old-bound case, and drank an appetiser before indulging in an excellent luncheon. He is generally enjoying life. He bathes, golfs, and dances, and is a regular theatre-goer. He says that ho intends to live to celebrate his hundredth birthday. “ B I s beneath his dignity,” Slater declared, “to answer abuse hy abuse—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had referred to him as an ungrateful dog—l won’t even call Sir Conan Doyle a money-seeker and notoriety-hunter.” “ Smoking a huge cigar, indeed!” said Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, when ho read the description. ‘‘ It is easy to smoke cigars if you receive thousands of pounds. But I am going to have my money.”
