NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

ROADS UNDER REPAIR. Several men are now employed in carrying out various classes of work on the Beach road. Between Macandrew Bay and Waver ley men are engaged in removing spoil from the foot of the cliffs and cleaning out the side channel. The contractors have not yet commenced to lay the bitumen surface, but as everything is practically ready, it is expected that a start will be made from the Waverley side of the Anderson’s Bay bridge early next month. Attention is being given to several of the side roads at Macandrew Bay by the Peninsula County Council. BOATING CLUB. It is expected that the North-East Harbour Boating Club will commence the season’s activities in earnest within the next few weeks. Boat owners and crews will make a start very shortly to prepare their boats for the opening day. The date for this function has not yet been decided upon, but there is every probability that it will take place towards the end of October. It is pleasing to note that the committee makes every effort to encourage boys to follow* the sport, and good work is being done in this respect. At its last meeting, in response to an appeal from the executive of the Sanders Sea Scouts and Cubs, the committee decided facilities at the disposal of the Scouts, subject to every care being exercised when boats and gear were used. It is necessary _ for the Sea Scouts to reeeive training in boating, and the action • x ? 0 , 3 committee is greatly appreciated, and the boys will undoubtedly derive considerable sea knowledge during the summer months. DIVERTING A CREEK. The diverting of the creek at the Maoandrew Bay end of District road in a direct line at the rear of the church and across the Beach road will be undertaken very shortly. This creek has always been a source of danger during heavy rain, as the culvert at District road has proved too small to carry a big volume of water. It is understood that a concrete waterway will be constructed from the church property, passing under the Beach road. This undertaking will be a portion of the work connected with the improvements to be made to the Beach road during the summer months. DISTRICT ROAD REPAIRED. That part of the District road which ™ i C ° nSld f. ab,y dama ged by flood several months ago has h ee n repaired, and connection with the Highcliff road has beeen effected. The repair work has been a very costly undertaking to the e o 1?™ i C 9 unt y Council. About 30 feet ot 36-inch pipes had to be laid to rarry the creek water under the road. The ? i“ e cre , ek , is about 40 feet below the road, level. The repairs are permanent, and if attention is paid to t* °, c J caalonal Periods no further trouble should be experienced. The Grand Howl to the Old Wolf concluded the Cub dUplay. A shrill blast of a bos’un’s whistle and a sharp order brought the Sanßers Sea Scouts ships crew to quarters. The Seagull crew then gave a fine historial item—the making of the Union Jack. Two Sea Scouts lay on deck the familiar blue and white flag of St. Andrew. Then two other Scouts brought forward the great Crusader’s flag, that of St. George. The flags were then cut and superimposed to form the first Union flag under King James I in 1604. St. Patrick’s Cross was then brought forward and cut and placed in position to form the present-day Union Jack representing the union of the United Kingdom with Ireland in 1801. The next item was boxing the compass, each Sea Scout taking his point on the compass card on the call of the coxswain. The Penguin Crew (starboard water) then constructed a very serviceable and efficient bridge trestle from manuka stakes and light cordage. The business was now proceeded with. The secretary presented the report and balance sheet, the latter showing that while the funds were low, they were being wisely administered. Shipmaster W, D. Pinett presented his report, showing the progress made from the first parade, when three Scouts and five Cubs were present, until to-day, the roll number now being:—Officers 3, Scouts 15, Cubs 25. The shipmaster commended the wnrk done by bis assistants (First-mate E. Hook and Cubmaster R. Tyrie). The election of the committee for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Chairman Mr T, Brickell; secretary, Mr C. Hook Committeee—Mesdames" Allan, KeUis. M'Dougal, and Taylor, Messrs J. Mackhn, J. M’Pherson.; O.B.E.—Messrs Bewley, Budd, Chirnside, M’Dougal, M’Hutcheon, Percy, and Scott. A number of ladies and gentlemen thanked the _ committee aud officers for their work in training the boys to be better citizens. Musical items were provided by Mr Contor (a member of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition), and sea chanties by the Cubs and Scouts. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. FOOTBALL TEAMS. A meeting was held in the Macandrew Bay Public Hall on Wednesday evening for the purpose of selecting football teams of married and single men to play in the annual match. There was a large attendance. It vyas also decided to make every effort to form a Peninsula Football Club next season with the object of competiiig__tn_the Dunedin competitions
