RED FUNNEL FLEET.
TWO NEW CARGO STEAJIERS. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, September 20. Messrs . Cammell, Laird, and Birkenhead,' who secured the contract for building two cargo steamers for the Union Steam Ship, Company, will be delivering one of them next month. Both wilt he similar to the well-known steamer Kartigi, hut wilMiave the latest improvements in cargo-handling and in other departments. Their names arc the Kainuro and Karepo, the first signifying a native tree and the second being the Maori name for . a marine plant, , The new vessels are of about 3500 tons deadweight, with a speed of 10£ to 11 knots. They have been designed primarily to meet the conditions of the coal trade of the West Coast of the South Island, but are very serviceable vessels for other cargo work on the New Zealand coast and in the intercolonial trade. It speaks well for the British, shipbuilder that the construction of the two steamers was begun six months ago and that one of them is almost ready to leave for New Zealand and the other will be ready ' almost immediately afterwards.
