EVIDENCES OF OIL.
AN INTERESTING DISCOVERY. MINES DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES. (Per United Press Association.) . TAUMARUNUI, August 19. A resident of Taumarunui, Mr E. R. Martin, claims that he has discovered evidences of oil on lands comprising 30,000 acres in the vicinity of Taumarunui Borough. His claim is supported by Dr Bender, a geologist, of Nelson, who reports favourably on Mr Martin’s discoveries. Last week Dr Bender gave, successful chemical demonstrations of Taumarunui od-bearing material before the Minister of Mines (Mr ly. A. Veitch). As a result or this demonstration an inspector of mines visited Taumarunui at the end of the week and went over the oil-bearing area with Dr Bvnder and Mr Martin with the object of submitting 'a, report on the alleged discovery to the department. .Springs and oil seepages are plainly evident in parts of the district and Dr .? n “ e }> w *?o has had much experience on oil tields. is confident that there is payable oil in the district.
