GALE IN WELLINGTON.
ONLY MINOR DAMAGE -REPORTED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 17. Surprisingly little damage was done by a heavy north-westerly gale which reached GS miles per hour in spasms early this morning. ' Structures damaged consisted chiefly of houses in fhc course of erection, sheds, fences, etc. Two houses being built at Island Bay wera rendered roofless. The' gale bad a peculiar effect on. a half-completed bulk storage tank for an importing company at Lower Hutt, the tank being crumpled up like paper. The scaffolding remaining on the upper portion of the D.I.C. building in Lambton quay commenced to flap jn the wind, and when a polo fell between two ears the taxi stand near by was quickly evacuated. The scaffolding was secured by ropes.
