NEW ZEALAND FRUIT.
SUDDEN RISE IN PRICES. (From Our Owx Correspondent.) LONDON, June 20. Although there is a temporary scarcity of apples this was not enough' to account for the exceptional rise in prices 'last Saturday. In fact, the trade was anxious about the prices, fof the strawberry season came in at the cud of last week, and this js generally the signal for a serious drop. ■ Instead, wc have a strange reversal of the usual happening. Apples that were selling at 14s and 15s a case went up to ISs and 20s. The Rangitiki consignment will get the benefit of these high prices. Tliere arc 15,0fi0 cases from places other than Otago, and 19,000 cases fimm Otago. The former were unloaded at Southampton, and, were railed up to London, and the.'latter came round by water. At Southampton there, were 5000 cases of apples .in store from the lonic, Mata-, roa, and Coptic. These were to have been sold at the end of the season, but as there are several late shipments Mill. E. Stephens decided to place the 5000 cases on the market at the present high prices. In addition, there were 15,000 cases of pears in store. These have been brought out, and are making from 18s to 24s per crate.
