Although hymn tunes in a more or less regular form date back to many centuries, probably to the time of St. Ambrose, the square cut Gorman form which is known now. as .chorale, with harmonies which form as important a part as the melody itself, did not come into nso until the sixteenth century. The oldest collection of those known is that iiv the Gesanburch, or Song Book, of Johann Walthcr, printed in 152-1, in which the custom of placing the melody in the tenor, just as in the secular songs of that time, is employed. It was not until (10 years afterwards (hat Lucas Osiandcr got the idea of putting the piclody in the treble, thinking, inn' as it proved, thinking rightly, that tills would, help in cougrcgai.ouai .-0r.;.,,.,. Ho also made the melody as simple iis possible, so that no musical training should ho necessary for those wishing to take part.
