EXPLOSION ON CRUISER
THE DEVONSHIRE DISASTER. INQUIRY TO BE OPENED. (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph— Copyright.) HUGBY, July 27. The official list shows that among the Devonshire’s casualties were one officer and seven of other ranks of the Royal Marines killed or died of wounds, and* 13 marines and naval ratings injured. The officer killed is Captain John Bath. The Devonshire has steamed for Malta, where an official inquiry will lie opened to-day. The Devonshire is one of the most up-to-date cruisers in commission, having been launched as recently as October, 1927, and commissioned in March, 1929. On a standard displacement of 10,000 tons she mounts eight Sin guns, four 3m anti-aircraft guns-, and four threepounders, and two two-pounder pompoms. . . ;
