YOUNG WOMAN ROBBED.
SMART CAPTURE EFFECTED. THE ACCUSED REMANDED. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, July 29. Smart work on the part of Sergeant Carmody, of the Mount Cook police,'on Saturday evening resulted in the , arrest of William Edward Francis, aged 18, about an hour after a complaint had been lodged by a young woman at the Mount Cook Police Station that she had been knocked down and robbed of her bag. Francis appeared before Mr T. B. M'Neil, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with robbing Catherine Lyons of her purse, containing 17s in money, a post office savings bank book, and other articles, at the same time using personal violence.
In applying for a-remand until Wednesday next. Sub-inspector Lander said that Hie matter was an indictable one. The facts, showed that the young woman was walking past the Technical School when she was caught by the accused and thrown to the ground, and her bog was snatched from- her. She reported the matter to the Mount Cook police, and about an hour later Sergeant Carmody arrested the accused. (‘.There will be two other charges of .a;similar, nature against the accused when. the matter comes on for final hearing,” concluded the sub-inspector. The remand was granted, bail being allowed in. the accused’s 'own bond or £IOO and two sureties of £SO each. He is to report daily to the police.
