PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Port Chalmers Borough Council held its monthly meeting last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr W. G. Love) and Crs L. Smith, Bell, Matheweon, Willmott, Scollay, Campbell, Craigie, Love, F. Smith, and Lump Ft was resolved to send letters of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mrs T. M'Alpine and Mr P. H. Thomson, who, the Mayor stated, were old residents of the town; and of the late Mrs Shaw and the late Mr Finlay, of Sawyers’ Bay. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr A. M.N. Miller wrote stating that 26 school children had to plod through mud on the road between Lawson’s store and the Naval shed. This had been the case for several ■ winters, and it was hoped the road would be now improved.—The Mayor said the road had been improved lately. Mr F. Voisey complained that he was disturbed at night through a horse being kept loose in a yard adjoining hia house. He asked that the nuisance be stopped.— The letter was referred to 'the Health -Department.

Mr J. M: Harlnnd advised’ that five members of the School Committee had been appointed to meet the Council in regard to-the expenditure of Poppy Day funds on a children’s playground.—lt was decided that the Reserves Committee should meet ■ the deputation and discuss the matter.

The Under-secretary, Department of Internal wrote in regard to a vacancy on the Fire Board, asking for the name of the councillor elected to fill the vacancy.—The council decided to appoint Cr Mathewson to the vacancy.

The Prime Minister acknowledged receipt of a request for a Government grant to relieve unemployment, and stated that the particulars supplied would be carefully considered, and a reply would be sent in due course.—Received.

The district railway engineer notified that having received notice that the counci) agreed to the filling in of a depression at the north end of the Upper Port Chalmers station, he would arrange for .the work to be carried out. There was no right of way across the railway line to the old cemetery.—The council reviewed the previous correspondence on the subject, the Mayor stating that the matter of lights on the station had not been lost sight of.—The letter was received. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote for information in respect of a comprehensive policy of highway construction in the South Island.—lt was resolved that the particulars requested should be supplied. REPORTS.

The Works Committee reported that for the past month, the following work had had the attention of the works department staff:—The widening and regrading of Macandrew road, near Miller and Tannage’s had been complete. The footpath in this sector had also been reformed. On the road 21 yards of one inch and a-half metal were carted and spread, and four yards of ashes were spread on the footpath. The road between Lawson's store and the Naval point, Carey s Bay, /was in. a very bad state, being covered in thick mud. Sixteen yards of one inch and a-half metal were spread on the road, and 10 yards of ashes were spread at the side to make a footpath for pedestrians. During the wet weather a slip occurred at Athfield’s corner, which had to be cleared. Two yards ot ashes were carted and spread on the Harbour terrace footpath, one yard of rubble was also required to fill up a hole Tl ? e water in Scotia street had been cleaned and the material carted to the tip. A fence had been erected at the Mussel Bay tip. During the month a demonstration of gas cookery was held in the Town Hall, but owing to the heavy ram the attendance was not as good as it might have been. It was the mtention of the department to hold another demonstration in the near future. Until recently the booster at the -gas k +i WaS i °^. at 5 o’clock each evening, thereby lowering the pressure. For the benefit of consumers the booster was now run up to 10 p.m. each evening. Since the last meeting a canvass had been made of Carey’s Ray and a full report of this would be made at a later meeting. Sales of cookers and gas appliances were still being maintained, and the showroom in George street was justifying its existence. Ur Smith said that something would have to be done in regard to the financial position at the gasworks. The overdraft was increasing—Cr Lunn and Cr Love also criticised the expenditure.—The chairman of the committee replied to the points raised, stating that initial expenditure was unavoidable in getting the gas consumption increased.—The Mayor said that the new departure of supplying cookers must be given a fair trial.
