The failure of the proposals for the amalgamation of the North Canterbury Sheep Farmers’ Co-operative* Freezing Company with the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company have led to a movement having for its object the buying out of the “ dry ” shareholders. They are so called to distinguish them from the producer shareholders., who have the privilege of getting their stock slaughtered at the company’s works, and who, unlike the “ dry ” shareholders, sometimes receive a bonus in addition to dividend. The proposal that has been placed before some of the directors (says the Press) is that the producer shareholders should agree to set aside 6d or Is per carcass for a fund to buy out the “ dry ” shareholders at the rate of 30s for each share they hold.. As an alternative it! is suggested that if the dry shareholders were relieved of the liability for the £2 per share uncalled capital, they would be prepared to leave their money in the concern. The Sussex has at last arrived from -Eastern ports, via the north, but Dunedin merchants are not yet in a position to say how much the cargo for this port was damaged by the fire which broke out on the vessel.
