CHINESE CARNIVAL.
The Chinese carnival, organised by the St. John Ambulance Association, will open in His Majesty’s Theatre and adjoining halls on Wednesday, May 1, and will run for 10 nights. The entertainment is in the hands of Mr F. Reade Wauchop. The first scene is laid in a Buddhist temple, and opens with a song by Norman Lemmon. To the accompaniment of Bemberg’s “ Hindoo Song,” the priests of the temple perform their elalltorate ritual before the Buddha. Children assemble in the centre of the stage to dance the Lotus ballet, while Chinese girls and tourists follow to form an ensemble full of graceful movement and vivid colour, Gladys Crossan, Dale Austin, Billie Mills, Tui Salt, Mollie Andrews, Norman Lemmon, Jack Nelson, and Fred Wauchop are featured in several numbers. ’ The proceeds of the carnival are in aid of the funds of the St. John Ambulance Association, and will be devoted to the purchase of sorely-needed new ambulances, and to enable the various philanthropic activities of the association among the sick and poor of the city to be carried on as hitherto.
