Mr A. Innes-Taylor, who is in charge of the dogs of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, which are now in quarantine at Quail Island, told a Christchurch Press representative that the Government was withholding the certificate necessary to clear the dogs from quarantine, pending consideration of a protest made by the Canterbury Sheep Owners’ Association against the project to use the dogs at Mount Cook during the winter months. The dogs were to leave for the Antarctic on December 1, and in the meantime it Was imperative that they should be kept in training. It would be useless to send the dogs south after months of idleness. It would be necessary, if the permit was withheld, to ship the dogs back to Canada and then bring them out again in the spring, a proceeding which would involve very great expense. The expedition authorities had offered to put up any bond considered necessary against the loss of . any of the dogs. They were always kept op the chain except when they were in harness, and the great value of the animals precluded any probability of carelessness. Mr Innes-Taylor describes the dogs as Yukon “huskies.” Fifteen were shipped from Alaska, but since they left their northern home the number has been increased by the arrival of seven pups, which are thriving well.
