NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

The anmiab meeting of the Macaadrew Bay School Committee, held early this week, was presided over by Mr G. F. Bewley, In speaking to the report and balance sheet, Mr Bewley stressed the necessity of provision being made to meet the growing need for a larger school. The present site, not being suitable for further additions,. negotiations were being entered into by , the committee, and the Education Board to secure a site containing between two and three acres. The attendance for the year showed a very considerable increase, the last week being a record attendance for the school. Any further increase would another teacher, also an additional room. The question of holding a reunion. was discussed. It was'stated thht this was one of the oldest schools in Otago, being opened about 75 years ago on a site at Dublin . Bay. The meeting decided to recommend the incoming committee to endeavour to arrange for a reunion during the year. The Macandrew Bay Card Club commenced its sessions this year with a very considerable increase in its membership. It is a record for this club, which has been continually in operation for 26 years. The club meets every Tuesday during the winter months, and a very enjoyable evening is assured to any new members who care to join up. The race for the Perfecto Cup between Takapuna class boats was held on the North-East Harbour Boating Club’s course last Saturday, and was won by the Bewley brothers, after a very interesting race.

At last residents on the Peninsula are to have a road which will be worthy of the name for all kinds of traffic, and in particular for motor traffic. ' This has been a long-felt want in the district, and no doubt the new tar-sealed road will he taken advantage of by many car owners. A more pleasant half-hour run would be very difficult to find anywhere .than the journey round the winding road which leads to Macandrew Bay. ' Although the North-East Harbour Rowing Club has not been very prominent in regattas during the past season, the members have shown their keenness by indulging in a great deal of practice. The club has a sound foundation, and the crews display skill with the oars. It is the intention of the club to take a more active part in next season’s activities, and with this end in view a new four-oar boat has been ordered from Mr J.-MTherson.

The divided opinion amongst members of the North-East Harbour Boating Club in connection with the fostering of the Takapuna class boat and the dispute between the club’s committee and the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association, in what is now universally known as the Cornwell Cup controversy, has resulted in a number of Dublin Bay boating enthusiasts starting in a small way on their own account. They have started in no uncertain way to cater for young yachtsmen, and there is every indication' that from this small beginning big things will loom on the horizon next boating season. This band of Dublin Bay enthusiasts arranged a yacht race last Saturday afternoon for the Brown Cup. They were crowned with success, as Six boats competed. -These provided a very fine race, which was watched throughout by a large number of residents from various vantage points. Another silver cup has been presented by a Dublin Bay enthusiast for competition, and this trophy will be raced for during the boating season next year.
