The central plateau, of the Antarctic continent, in'the midst of which lies the South Pole, is more than 10,000 feet above sea level. Along the coast, on the side nearest New Zealand, is the Great Tee Barrier, an unbroken series of icy cliffs from 100 feet to 400 feet high, and extending 400 miles. Captain Roald Amundsen was. the first .to reach the South Pole in /December, 1911, Captain Robert F, Scott reaching there about a month later.
