GENERAL NEWS.
The Rescue* Lodge, No. 105, International. Order of Good Templars, met on Tuesday in the. Oddfellows’ Hall, King Edward street, Bro. W. A. lies, chief templar, presiding. There was a good attendance of members, also visitors from'Hope of Caversham and Hope of Dunedin Lodges. The election of officers for the new quarter resulted as follows: —Chief templar, Bro. W. A. lies (reelected) ; vice-templar, Sister Mrs Smith (re-elected); past chief templar, Bro. E. H. Sincock {re-elected); secretary, Bro. S. Brain (re-elected); assistant secretary, Bro. W. G. lies (re-elected)'; chaplain, Sister Mrs Rivers (reelected) ; treasurer, Bro. J. Hilton (reelected) ; financial secretary, Sister L. Baird (re-elected); marshal, Sister E. Thomas (re-elected); deputy marshal, Sister E. Sincock (re-elected); guard, Bro. T. Cochrane; sentinel. Sister B. lies; organists, Sisters Morwood, Williams, and Mears, Following the election of officers a short Anzac service was held, the following taking part;— Solo, Bro. E. H. Sincock; recitations, Sisters V. Dray and I. Mears; and, an appropriate address by Bro. T. H. Dalton, G.C.T. The Star of the South Juvenile Temple met the same evening, when there was a large attendance. Bro. J. Hilton, 5.1. W., was in charge, and six candidates were initiated. A good programme of songs, recitations, and instrumental items was rendered by a number ,of members.
The annual meeting of St. Matthew’s Church was held on April 18, the Rev. W. A. Hamblett presiding. Mr Knight, in moving the churchwardens’ report and the balance sheet, congratulated the vicar on being appointed chairman of the Council of Christian Congregations; and also referred to Mr A. W. Martin’s splendid work as treasurer during the year. Mr Dunkley brought forward the following remit from the vestry:— " That the treasurer be complimented upon'his excellent work done during the year, and the satisfactory state of the finances resulting therefrom, os shown in the balance sheet.” The vicar supported the motion, and remarked how fortunate they were in Laving such an excellent treasurer. Mr W. J. Ingram was re-appointed churchwarden, and Mr A. W. Martin was re-appointed parishioners’ churchwarden. The following were appointed to the vestry Messrs G. G. Austin, S. Dunkley, A. Frank, R. Guy; C. W. Hannah, W. H. Poyntz, J. J. Ronaldspn, A. Rule, - F. W. Knight, and Dr Williams. The vicar expressed his thanks to the vestry in seeing its way clear to appoint Mr J. Simpson as assistant to the parish, and remarked that he had already, made his. presence felt amongst the congregation. Mr Simpson thanked the vicar for the pleasant remarks made, and said ho hoped to devote more time to the church later, when he had finished his studies. Slade Hall was crowded on Wednesday evening with Central Mission members and friends, the occasion being to extend a welcome to the Rev. G. B. Hinton to the superintendency of the mission. Mr D. Cameron presided, and stated that the mission had extended a unanimous invitation to Mr Hinton to take charge of the mission, and the conference had confirmed, the invitation, and he now had great pleasure in welcoming the Rev. Mr Hinton, with Mrs Hinton and daughters, to the city. The mission had a splendid record since it was established by the late Rev. W. Ready about 40 years ago, and the work had been successfully carried on by the Rev. W. A. Sinclair, the late Rev. W. Slade, the Rev. Clarence Eaton, and the Rev. W. Walker, and the chairman wished Mr Hinton a very happy and successful .ministry. Short speeches of welcome, were made by Sister Hazel, Mr W. Hoskins, Mr W. Paris, Hr H. H. Johnson, Mr -E. Bush, Mr C. Wise, and others, who promised the new minister the hearty support of the mission organisations. The Rev. G. B. Hinton, in reply, cordially thanked the mission for the, very hearty welcome extended, and paid' a tribute to the splendid ministry of the Rev. W. Walker, and stated that he hoped to he able to maintain the high standard set by him. His experience in mission work in London, Mr Hinton hoped, would "help him in his work here, and he urged all present- to do their .utmost to make the mission operations in. all respects very successful and of great benefit to the city. He greatly appreciated the. sincere welcome and thanked the mission on behalf of Mrs Hinton and daughters. A splendid programme was contributed by Misses Hazel_ Knowles, Eva Judd, Mona'Dawson, Rea Griffin, and Penny Marshall, Messrs Ralph Byers, D. Cattanach,. , * otatau, , and Brian Dickinson, while Miss Muriel-Caddie act6d as accompanist. A telegram was read from the , Rev. W. Walker (Auckland) conveying his best wishes.
