" ■ 2 _ An interesting table, giving the dimensions of old and modern cargo and passenger ships, was placed before the Wanganui Harbour Board at its last meeting by Mr T. H. Lovegrove, a member of the board. He said that in view of the contemplated improvement scheme in the harbour the question had arisen whether the policy of shipping companies was to build longer ships with increased draught or whether the tendency was to reduce both. “I find after going into matters in Welington,” Mr Lovegrove said, “'that the newer boats favour our scheme.” He quoted from the table compiled the length, beam, and depth of boats built, in 1910, and compared,them with those of more recent times. This showed that in 1914 there was a tendency to build longer and bigger craft with greater draught, but latterly the aim was to decrease the length and draught and increase the beam dimensions-
