AUCKLAND, April 25. Strikingly indicative of the thrift of the community is the fact that the amount to the credit of depositors in the Auckland Savings Bank at March 31 totalled £0,640,014, an increase of £500,720 on the total at the same time last year. In his address at the annual meeting of tiustees, the retiring president /(Mr E. Anderson) said that perhaps the subject of chief importance during the year was the x eduction of the lending rate on m-st mortgage advances by one half per cent,, from 61 to 0 per Cent, and the rate of deposits by one quarter per cent, from 44 per cent, to 44 per cent. The net proVkr ins the ., year V ns £ 61,010, against £66,108 in the previous year. The decrease was- wholly due to the reduction m the mortgage rate which dated from January 1, whereas the reduction of one quarter percent, in the rate of depositors came into force only after the close of tne financial year.
