THE FLOOD PROBLEM.

TO THE EDITOIL

Sir, —A paragraph in the leading article in your issue of Wednesday last reads as follows: —"It would seem that the residents in the area flooded did not, prior to the event, entertain any serious 'apprehension of suffering damage and loss by inundation." As a thrice-flooded resident in the flooded area I give this statement an emphatic denial. Having suffered loss and damage througii three floods without receiving a penny compensation, 1 can tell of many anxious days and sleepless nights when it was raining in this fair city of ours. As for not being very articulate in expressions of apprehension, I may say that it wag only abou J six _ months ago that i approached a councillor With reference to assistance to build a protection wall between ray property and the Leith. I was told that the: water bad not been in any of the houses in our side of the Leith, but eventually two men were sent to .investigate, and, after going through the' house, could' see, even after six years, that the walls still showed signs of the flp d in 1923. although they had been twice scraped and papered. They informed me that they could vo nothing until they saw the Leith in flood. Well, one look at the property at the present time should be sufficient evidence to prove my claim for a protective wall between my section and the Leith, and until I am provided with this I shall not have “ a sense of reasonable safety,” or even an hour’s peace of mind when the next downpour occurs.—l am, etc., Leith Street Resident.
