Mr E. Longworth will be a candidate for the mayoralty of St. Kilda at the forthcoming election. Our Christchurch correspondent states that Mr D, W. Westenra, a member of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was elected yesterday morning as the representative of the Canterbury district on the Board of Agriculture. Mr James Carr, of Methven, was also nominated for the position, but on a ballot being taken, Mr Westenra was elected. Mr James Bain, of Ravensbournc. who has attended the weekly stock at Burnside for 50 years, celebrated his eighty-first birthday last week. At the Burnside sale yesterday opportunity was taken by the butchers, stock agents, and farmers attending the sale to present Mr Bain with a case of pipes. In making the presentation. Mr A. G. Sherriff, president of the Master Butchers’ Association, referred to the sterling character of the recipient, and said they all hoped he would be spared to patronise the sales for years to come. Messrs A. W. Bolwell and James Henderson, of the Master Butchers’ Association, and Mr J. M’Arthur, representing the Stock and Station Agents’ Association, also referred to Mr Bain’s long connection with the Burnside sales, and to the respect in which he was held by those who had business dealings with him. Opportunity was taken at. the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club’s hour at the Municipal Baths on Tuesday night for members to bid farewell to the club captain, Mr W. Boyd, who is being transferred to the railway engineer’s office, Wanganui. Mr Boyd, who is also a member of the Pirates Football Club, was the recipient of a presentation of a pipe, tobacco pouch, and cigarette case, and reference was made by several speakers to the high esteem in which he was held. In acknowledging the presentation, the recipient expressed the hope that in the near future he would again be associated with the Kiwi Club, of which he would always have the most pleasant memories. The Rev. C. Eaton, who has been'transferred to New Plymouth, concluded a six years’ ministry at Wesley Church, Taranaki street, Wellington, on Sunday evening, and the occasion was made memorable by the tribute paid to the departing minister by the very large congregation. Even more impressive was the after-ser-vice farewell, which took place in Wesley Hall, whither the entire congregation adjourned to spend a last social hour with Mr Eaton. The chair was occupied by Mr L. J. Clark, circuit steward. The throughout were marked by striking evidences of the high esteem in which both Mr and Mrs Eaton were held by the people among whom they had laboured. After a short musical programme, when items were rendered by Mrs Wilfred Andrews, Miss Phyllis Liddell, and Miss Mary Cooley, addresses were given on behalf of the various organisations of the church.
