PASSENGER INJURED AT SEA. (Pee United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February' 16.' Mrs M. E. Bedford, aged 62, dislocated her collarbone by falling downstairs on the Maui Pomare, en route from Norfolk Island, in, a rough sea. After first-aid . had been rendered, medical attention on arrival at Auckland was requisitioned by wireless, and the port health officer attended to the injured lady on arrival, at 9.40 last night. Pratique was granted, and the other passengers allowed ashore instead of waiting until morning as usual. Mrs Bedford remained aboard, and wan taken to hospital this morning. ACCIDENTS IN AUCKLAND. THE WEEK-END TOLL. (Feb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February 17. Several accidents occurred at Auckland during the week-end, , Maud Rappard, aged 15.' uf 28 Anzac avenue, Takapuna, received severe head injuries through being knocked down by a motor car while she was crossing the road at Takapuna yesterday. She was admitted to. the hospital, and her condition is serious. ” He .d injuries were also received through being knocked down by a car, resulting in the death at the hospital of George Sumner, aged two, whose parents reside at Jellicoe avenpe,,Mount Roskjll. As the result of a collision between two niotor cars at Newmarket early this morning, two men. Athol Dawkins, aged 24, of 325 Manukau road, Epsom, and Stanley Body, of Te Arona, were admitted to hospital. Dawkins is suffering from severe head injuries, and hie condition is serious. Body is not badly injured. They were motoring to Epsom from the i ity when their car collided with another car driven by Maurice Guttridge, who was travelling from Epsom. It was identified as the body of Thomas Ernest Ballard, of Turua. Death is said to have- been caused by cerebral haemorrhage. The police state that there are no suspicious circumstances. He was driving a load of firewood, when an overhanging length struck a-post, and was forced back and driven through the youth’s body just above the crutch. (Pee United Peess Association.) / ‘ INVERCARGILL, February 15, The body of B. Bain, of Avena'l road, was found in the estuary yesterday morning,. The deceased, who was aged ST, wa« a single man, and had resided'in Invercargill all his life. For about 25 year# . he was employed by Lewis’s, Ltd., drapers, an d latterly had been engaged in fishing Stewart Island, where he proceeded for health reasons. He was a prominent athlete in his younger days, a Southland footballer for 15 years, a speedy pedes-, tnan, having won the 100 yards Sheffield at the Irish Athletic Society’s sports and at numerous other similar gatherings, and he took a keen interest in swimming, boating, and boxing,‘having been a member of committee managing,. these sports. The deceased was - most unassuming and highly popular in athletic circles. Owing to indifferent health he had latterly suffered from depression. FATAL MOTOR ACCIDENT. gore woman killed. (Fkom Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 16. A fatal motor accident occurred at about 8.30 this morning on the -Main South road, by which Mrs Holland, wife of Mr Thomas Holland, of Gore, lost her life. The car, a Hudson Six, driven by Mr M. M. Robertson, of Gore, and carrying three passengers, had left that town in the early morning bound for Dunedin. All went well until about three miles past Balclutha. at Mr D. Willocks’s corner, where a lot of, loose gravel was encountered on the road, and the car skidded badly and overturned. All the occupants were thrown clear, but Mrs Holland was found to have received a severe knock on the head. Mr Dan Fitzgerald, of Gore, escaped with a few scratches on the face, and the other lady passenger (Mrs Moyle), and 'the driver were unhurt, although Mrs Moyle suffered somewhat from shock. Dr Frengley was communicated witli by telephone and was quickly' on the scene, and ascertained that Mrs Holland was suffering from a fractured skull. She and Mr Fitzgerald and Mrs Moyle were all _ conveyed to the Balclutha Hospital, which was reached about 9 a.m,, but Mrs Holland expired 20 minutes after admission. The driver of the car states that it was not travelling very fast at the time of the accident. A high wind was blowing, and, with the loose .gravel on tlie road, probably accounted for the accident. The car itself was somewhat damaged, but Mr Robertson Was able to take it back to Gore in the afternoon. An inquest on the body of Mrs Holland will be held on Monday morning. CONCRETE FLOOR COLLAPSES. Walter A. Jamieson, a single man, aged 18 years, residing at 29 Grove street, and Leonard Roy Quinnell, aged 31 years, a married man, residing at 12 Embo street, were caught underneath the concrete floor of a building which they were Helping to dismantle at Halfway Bush ‘on ’ Saturday morning. Both men suffered head and back injuries, and were admitted to the Hospital at 9.30 a.m. for treatment, HEAD INJURIES. John W. Robb, a married man, aged 27 years, who was employed as a motor driver at Wilson’s brewery, was admitted to the Hospital at S pan, on Saturday suffering from head injuries caused through being thrown from his motor cycle on the Mam North road over Mount Cargill „ MOTOR CARS COLLIDE. t An accident occurred on, Saturday it 5.50 p.m.. when two cars, one a Dodge, travelling south, and driven by Mr Bishop! and, the other a Buick, returning from thS Wingatui races., and driven by Mr Newall. collided opposite the old hotel at' Paii> field, the former’ car was damaged about the front wheels, axel, and mudguards, noonewae injured. -
