BUFFALOES’ CARNIVAL.

A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. '' '.4 The Royal and Ancient Order of Buffaloes (Dunedin) opened a carnival in Burns Hall last night, the object being to raise funds to liquidate the debt on the lodge room. The carnival was fairly well attended and plenty of entertainment was offered for those present. The hall was decorated in the carnival style. It had been intended to hold several boxing rentests last night, but it was unfortunate that, owing to a decision of the Hall Committee, this idea had to be abandoned, as it would undoubtedly have proved a decided attraction. Mr Black, who opened the carnival, dwelt upon the work of the Order ir the Old Country, where already three orphanages had been put into operation. The present endeavour was to open a new home.which would be more than an institution. It was greatly desired that this should be a home for the children of members of (he Order'where they would be treated as nearly as possible in the same manner as they would in homes of their own.' In Britain 'many prominent men took an active part in the Order, and there existed a fine spirit of brotherhood. Such a spirit the young branch in the Dominion was trying to build up. The amusements consisted of darts, skittles, throw-ins, and teeth. Madame Zedi proved % good fortune teller, and there were several stalls on which a great variety of articles were displayed for sale. . In addition, the Dunedin Highland Pipe Band was in attendance, and played several enjoyable selections. The following is a list of the stallholdcrs;~Darts, Messrs J. Jelly and M. Muir; skittles— Messrs J, Patton, C. Johnson, and H, C. Bennett; throw-ins—Messrs J. Borland, W. H. Taylor, M. Gourley, E. P. MUlroy, J. C. Hawkins, and E. Pipe; teeth—Messrs C.
