NON-TOTALISATOR MEETINGS.
MAINLY OF BENEFIT TO BOOKMAKERS. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 8 Whether or not the uon-totalisator clubs should be granted registration was the principle debated at a meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association this morning, when South Otago was granted permisUou to hold a nontotahsator meeting at Laiclutha on March , The view of members was to the effect that, as a general pnuciule, such meetings were detrimental te the trotting sport, and were mainly benefit meetings for bookmakers. SILVER PAPER UNDER A CLOUD. (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. The three-year-old Silver Paper is under a _ cloud at present. When W. Stone, his trainer, visited his. box this morning the horse was found to be suffering from severe injuries, probably caused through being cast. He had lost some skin from the near hock, while a tendon in tm. off hind leg was affected. Constant attention has reduced the swelling in the hoc’* but the tendon remains very sore. It seems certain that he will not be able to race at the Dunedin meeting, as he will require a few days’, rest under the most favourable conditions.
A SUCCESSFUL APPEAL. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. Free Holmes succeeded in hi. appeal to the New Zealand Trotting Association against the decision of the New Brighton Trotting Club in fining him £25 for alleged corrupt practices. After the Avon Handicap at the club’s summer meeting an inquiry was held info happc ings in the race, and after the race. It was alleged that Holmes called oui to Price during the race and said certain words after the race which amounted to advice to break one of the rules controlling the conduct of trotting races.
