; The praiseworthy eagerness of America to secure some of the art treasures of Europe is equalled only by the readiness of some Europeans to supply the want. It is said that New York has lately acquired some examples of the work of the great Donatello which have been made to order in the last few years. The sculptor was not Donatello, who died in 1466, but Dossena, an obscure genius who still lives in Rome, and was cm ployed by two dealers who are said to have exploited his remarkable ability for imitating in his own manner the works of the great. He seems to be a simple soul, not unacquainted with the Roman wineshops, who did not even suspect that Jus masterpieces were being sold at a profit of which he received the smallest fraction.
