CRICKET.

SOUTHLAND v. NORTH OTAGO. A DRAWN GAME. (Special to Daily Times.] INVERCARGILL, January 9. The cricket match between Southland and North Otago was concluded to-day in beautiful weather, the game ending in a draw. The homo side continued its innings this morning, but only three runs were added before Groves edged one to Zimmerman in the dips, Anderson was associated with Lee in a fine third-wicket partnership, 60 runs being added to the total. Tapley and Lee then took the score to 136 at the luncheon adjournment, Lee having 88 to his credit'.and Tapley 58. Lee was dismissed without scoring on resuming, out Tapley went on.to make 119 by brilliant and dashing cricket. Tapley is an ex-Christ’s College youth and has not yet participated in senior club games, but this was hie second century in as many games for Southland during the past fortnight, He scored all round the wicket, but was particularly strong in his driving, qo fewer than seven sixes and 11 fours being included in his total. The innings closed for the good total of 368 runs. Left with 213 to get to avert an innings defeat, North Otago commenced badly and four wickets were down for 45 runs. Zimmerman again batted_ strongly, however, and materially assisted in taking the score to 110 for the fifth wicket. The next three wickets fell, cheaply, biit with twenty minutes to go and only one wicket to fall, the Southland attack could not shift Crone and Meikle, who played put time, the score board showing 155 runs for nine wickets. It was a very exciting finish. Southland had a good chance in the third last over, but Crozier faded to accept a snick in the slips from Meikle. Scores.— NORTH OTAGO.
